Research interest

I am interested in the analysis IT support for work, learning and other activities of people. In this I focus on the practice of people, that is, I take a deeper look into how people work everyday and what shapes this way of working. I use the leading paradigm of socio-technical systems to design and implement IT support for work and learning. In this put emphasis on the integration of stakeholders into the development of IT technology and the mutual shaping of IT and human behavior. My work spans several areas and scientific communities:

  • Support for cooperative work and learning in fields such as Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) and Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL). My work in these areas is mirrored in my publications
  • The convergence of digital and physical worlds in application areas such as Augmented Reality (see project Pflegebrille), Ubiquitous Computing and the Internet of Things. See also our Ubiquitous Interaction Lab, which is currently in the making.
  • IT and its integration into processes in less tech-savvy environments such as healthcare and public administrations, in which highly complex and changing processes need to be supported. Examples can be found in project EmployID and Pflegebrille.

Community

I am deputy head of the German Computer Association ("Gesellschaft für Informatik") Special Interest Group for CSCW, in which we try to make CSCW and even more popular field of research, development and teaching in Germany. Each year we conduct the CSCW Challenge, for which students can hand in their projects and get rewards at the German HCI conference ("Mensch und Computer").

I am a member of the steering committees of the German Special Interest Group for Human Computer Interaction, in which I try to develop opportunities for junior researchers and students to become active in HCI. I am deputy head of the CSCW chapter of this SIG, in which we try to make CSCW and even more popular field of research, development and teaching in Germany.

I am also a member of program committees of various national and international conferences such as ECSCW und CSCWACM CHIACM GROUP and ECTEL.

Publications

I have (co) authored about 140 publications in journals, conferences, workshops, books and other media.
